LIGHTSUM Launches Japanese Debut With a New Kawaii Identity
LIGHTSUM has begun a new chapter in Japan with its major-label debut. The six-member group, which first debuted in Korea in 2021, released the mini-album Re:idol on Sept. 23. The project marks the group’s first major-label launch in Japan and presents a deliberately refreshed identity for the local market.
The album title reflects LIGHTSUM’s intention to start again in Japan. For the release, the members adopted kawaii, a Japanese aesthetic associated with cuteness, and incorporated elements of the country’s idol culture. They also changed their makeup, stage outfits and poses to match the new direction. The concept differs noticeably from common K-pop girl-group styles, with the group choosing to embrace Japan’s participatory idol culture rather than simply reproduce its Korean image.
Cube Entertainment said the project aims to introduce Japanese idol culture alongside LIGHTSUM’s new appeal and help the group establish a lasting base in the country. The release follows a roughly two-year hiatus. LIGHTSUM consists of Sangah, Chowon, Nayoung, Hina, Juhyeon and Yujeong.
