Netflix Plans Broad Cinema Release for ‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has discussed plans for a wide theatrical release of KPop Demon Hunters 2. Speaking at Bloomberg’s Screentime event, he said audiences could see the animated sequel in cinemas on a large scale. Reports cited by Deadline and other entertainment outlets carried his comments on September 30, local time.
The follow-up is reportedly expected to arrive in 2029, with Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning as directors. Sarandos said theatrical releases need to offer significant financial potential to make up for any effect on Netflix streaming. He named KPop Demon Hunters and The Chronicles of Narnia as titles being considered for extensive international cinema distribution.
The original film, released in June 2025, follows HUNTR/X, a K-pop group whose members secretly defend the world from supernatural dangers. It passed 300 million views in its first 90 days and became Netflix’s most-watched movie of all time. A 2025 sing-along cinema event across several countries also had more than 1,300 sold-out screenings, demonstrating the film’s reach beyond streaming.
